TerraSim Awarded STRICOM BAA Study Contract

January 17, 2000

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim, Inc. has been awarded a two year contract under NAWCTSD BAA 97-02, Topic 1-G, "Synthetic Natural Environments." This contract will focus on research in the tight coupling of emerging simulation database diagnostic systems with database compilation tools, geared towards faster and cheaper production of higher quality geospatial databases, by re-engineering the traditional linear nature of database design, build, and test workflows. In addition, TerraSim will investigate novel methods for incremental database update, avoiding the traditional long timelines between source data editing and database visualization.

TerraSim will leverage its position as a SEDRIS associate and will work with AcuSoft, Inc. and the Institute for Defense Analyses to determine appropriate methods for allowing SEDRIS applications such as AcuSoft's Side-by-Side Viewer and IDA's SEE-IT diagnostic system to communicate with database construction tools such as TerraTools® using current and evolving SEDRIS technology.

"We are very pleased to have received a positive response to our white paper proposal submitted to the STRICOM Synthetic Environment and Technology Management Division," said David McKeown, President of TerraSim. Dr. Jefferey Shufelt, principal investigator on the STRICOM research project, also commented on the effort. "It is clear that the current long time delay between detection and correction of both geometric and attribution errors is the 'long pole in the tent' for rapid database construction," he said. "For modern ground-based simulation systems, requiring automated integration of transportation, drainage, tree canopies and manmade features, derived from NIMA geospatial source, increasing the database complexity is impossible without more effective linkage between diagnostics and database construction."

About TerraSim

TerraSim is a high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation database construction using cartographic data. TerraTools®, their primary product, is available for both Windows NT/2000/XP and SGI IRIX workstations. TerraTools is used in the automated construction of dense urban environments for regional planning as well as simulation databases for military exercises covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
