TerraSim at IMAGE 2000 Conference

July 07, 2000

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim is actively participating at the Image 2000 conference in Scottsdale, Arizona this week (July 10-15) by presenting a course on "Modeling Urban Environments." We will also be showcasing several major new capabilities of our TerraTools® product line at the Image 2000 technology exhibit.

Dr. Jefferey Shufelt and Mr. William Starmer will present a new course in "Modeling Urban Environments." This course provides an introduction to urban modeling applications and provides examples of urban environment generation for database developers, urban planners, and managers.

Material presented includes an overview of the applications of urban databases, GIS and cartographic source data considerations, and a review of terrain skin construction. Model types and formats, model placement techniques, and automatic model generation will be discussed in detail, with several case study databases highlighted to aid in the presentation. Case studies include the use of USGS source data for an overview of Santa Barbara, CA, a database of the Schenley Park area of Pittsburgh, PA, a database of Philadelphia, PA from the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), as well as a database of Washington, DC provided by Hyperion Technologies. Each database was constructed using advanced automated urban modeling capabilities found in TerraTools® for applications ranging from geographic familiarization, video surveillance, training for "first responders", to driving simulation.

At the Image 2000 Technology exhibit on Wednesday, July 12, TerraSim will demonstrate TerraTools V1.1® for Windows NT and V1.2 for SGI IRIX. TerraTools V1.2 (released April 2000) has been enhanced to support highly automated generation of urban environments from GIS source data. It features a new Model Library Editor, which supports organizing and editing a hierarchical collection of models. Complementing the Model Library Editor are multiple highly automated model generation and placement tools. V1.2 also includes support for exporting completed databases to SEDRIS; these SEDRIS transmittals have been validated with the Institute for Defense Analyses's (IDA) SEE-IT diagnostic tools and AcuSoft's Side-By-Side viewer.
