Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim will be actively participating at the Image 2001 conference in Scottsdale, Arizona this year (July 9-13). In addition to instructing the course on Modeling Urban Environments for the second consecutive year, TerraSim is involved in the introduction of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) in Urban Environments, as well as showcasing several major new capabilities of the TerraTools® product line at the Image 2001 technology exhibit.
Dr. Jefferey Shufelt and Mr. William Starmer will instruct the course in "Modeling Urban Environments". This course provides an introduction to urban modeling applications and provides examples of urban environment generation for database developers, urban planners, and managers.
Material presented includes an overview of the applications of urban databases, GIS and cartographic source data considerations, and a review of terrain skin construction. Model types and formats, model placement techniques, and automatic model generation will be discussed in detail, with several case study databases highlighted to aid in the presentation. Case studies include the use of USGS source data for an overview of Santa Barbara, CA, a database of the Schenley Park area of Pittsburgh, PA, a database of Philadelphia, PA from the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), as well as a database of Washington, DC provided by Hyperion Technologies. Each database was constructed using advanced automated urban modeling capabilities found in TerraTools®, covering a range of applications including geographic familiarization, video surveillance, training for "first responders", and driving simulation.
TerraSim has also participated in the organization of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) within the IMAGE Society focused on Urban Environment Visualization. The SIG technical program promises to bring together end users, system integrators, and software and hardware vendors to discuss emerging trends in the visualization of geospatial data typically found in city, municipal, and regional planning offices.
About TerraSim
TerraSim is a high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation database construction using cartographic data. TerraTools®, their primary product, is available for both Windows NT/2000/XP and SGI IRIX workstations. TerraTools is used in the automated construction of dense urban environments for regional planning as well as simulation databases for military exercises covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
