TerraSim, Inc. at NYSGIS

October 09, 2001

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim, Inc. will demonstrate the latest release of TerraTools® for the rapid production of 3D urban visualizations at the 2001 New York State GIS Conference in Albany, New York, October 29-30.

Mr. David McKeown and Mr. William Starmer will instruct a course in "Modeling Urban Environments, An Overview of Modern Urban Simulation Database Generation using TerraTools." This course provides an introduction to urban modeling applications and provides examples of urban environment generation for database developers, urban planners, and managers.

Course materials presented include an overview of the applications of urban databases, GIS and cartographic source data considerations. Model types and formats, model placement techniques, and automatic model generation will be discussed in detail, with several case study databases highlighted to aid in the presentation. Each case study database was constructed using advanced automated urban modeling capabilities found in TerraTools®, covering a range of applications including geographic familiarization, video surveillance, training for "first responders," and driving simulation.

Mr. David McKeown, President of TerraSim, Inc., will also present a paper on Real-time 3D Urban Visualization and Simulation. The presentation will address emerging technology and trends in the generation of synthetic natural environments with an emphasis on urban visualization. Recent advances in real-time 3D visualization provide the ability to generate high-fidelity urban models automatically, from existing GIS and CAD data. By utilizing existing investments in GIS and geospatial infrastructure, city planners can exploit modern visualization tools to produce accurate interactive simulations, and rapidly update these 3D simulations without manual intervention as updates are made to the GIS source base. Case studies for a number of complex urban environments will be presented, highlighting these trade-offs and illustrating the level of performance that can be achieved from typical GIS databases.

About TerraSim

TerraSim is a high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation database construction using cartographic data. TerraTools®, their primary product, is available for both Windows NT/2000/XP and SGI IRIX workstations. TerraTools is used in the automated construction of dense urban environments for regional planning as well as simulation databases for military exercises covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
