TerraSim Invited to Participate in Terrain Week '98

March 13, 1998

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim has been invited to participate in Terrain Week '98 to be held on 18-22 May 1998 at MCC in Austin, Texas. The meeting is sponsored by DARPA, STRICOM, and U.S. Army Topographic Engineering Center (USATEC) and is the fifth in a series dating back to February 1994.

The week's activity includes a Terrain Walk at Fort Hood including the MOUT sites, a day devoted to Data Exchange highlighting SEDRIS and GeoVRML, and "TIN Day" featuring the TIN Shoot-off Competition. The week will be capped by "Process Day" which will focus on the entire simulation terrain database construction process flow. The STOW and JSIM Land Executive Agent efforts will be discussed in detail, along with an update on the Global Terrain Data Base effort.

On Thursday, May 21, Dr. Jefferey Shufelt, Head of Cartographic Feature Extraction, will present "The Az Zubayr Experiment: From Framework Data to Synthetic Environment" as a part of the TIN Day lessons learned session. This was the first demonstration of the fully automated construction of a simulation database with integrated features and models using NIMA Foundation Elevation Data and Mission Specific Data Set (MSDS) feature data.

A number of commercial companies including Coryphaeus, Multigen, TerraSim, and Terrex have been invited to participate in the TIN Shoot-off Competition, using a common dataset consisting of a NIMA DEM and feature data over Camp Pendleton, CA.

Mike Polis, Head of Visual Simulation at TerraSim, remarked "The TIN Shoot-off is always interesting since it is rare that commercial tools are directly compared using the same geospatial input dataset and a crisp set of database construction requirements. Past competitions have had a mix of research systems as well as commercial offerings. This year it's clear that the newest technology has transitioned into the commercial marketplace."
