Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim's TerraTools™ automated simulation database generation package has been selected by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) Pathfinder '99 Team as worthy of further evaluation.
Pathfinder, coordinated by the Technology Insertion Division of NIMA's Technology Insertion & Assessment Office, is one of a series of continuing NIMA activities to identify technologies to assist imagery and geospatial information analysts and the users of the geospatial information infrastructure (GII).
Pathfinder '99 is assessing the scene visualization environment from low- to high-end using commercial and non-developmental market research techniques. TerraTools, with its emphasis on the automated construction of simulation databases from geospatial data, is one of a small group of systems judged to be relevant to the goals of the evaluation exercise.
Dave McKeown, president of TerraSim, commented, "Our presentation during the first round of the Pathfinder evaluation was evidently well received." Of the 38 hardware and software "solutions" presented to the government panel of Source Material Experts, 25 were judged to be relevant to further study. Within that group TerraTools was placed in the second tier of 12 "relevant" solutions, ahead of several larger and more established commercial products. The first tier of five "broadly based" solutions was made up primarily of hardware and systems integrators that covered a broader range of image processing and analysis tools. The third tier consisted of eight commercial products which were classified as "niche solutions."
TerraSim will participate in the second round of GUI and Functionality evaluations on July 7th at the Silver Spring, Maryland offices of Silicon Graphics. A final report of the NIMA Scene Visualization Pathfinder '99 findings is expected in December 1998.
