TerraTools™ Selected by Lockheed Martin for STOW World Wide Database Project

July 03, 1998

Pittsburgh, PA - Lockheed Martin Information Systems (LMIS, Bellevue, WA) has selected TerraSim's automated simulation database construction system, TerraTools™, for use in the DARPA's Synthetic Theater of War (STOW) World Wide Database Project. This project involves building a simulation database of the entire world -- over 48,000 1-degree cells with integrated features -- to a stringent polygon budget and within tight timelines. Key capabilities of TerraTools are (1) the ability to integrate coastline features at a constant elevation, (2) the ability to integrate transportation (cuts and fills) and hydrographic features (flat lakes, flowing of rivers locally downhill), and (3) the ability to integrate 3-D vector features describing the cell boundaries into the triangulation. This initial database will be used as a foundation, with additional areas of interest to be added at higher resolutions as required.

"We are pleased to be working with Lockheed Martin, Bellevue, on such an exciting and interesting large scale database construction project," said Michael Polis, TerraSim's Head of Visual Simulation. "TerraTools was selected by LMIS after a careful evaluation of several other commercial products due to its ability to deal with complex cartographic features, the high degree of automatic user control over polygon budgets, and the rapid generation of the completely integrated one degree cells required by the WWDB project." Initial benchmarks for 1 degree cells using coarse DEMs with surface lines, roads, and railroad features indicated one to two minutes of compilation time on an Silicon Graphics R5000 O2 workstation, highlighting TerraTools' rapid construction capabilities. TerraSim will deliver multiple copies of its TerraTools V1.0 software package to LMIS and will supply ongoing extended maintenance for the period of the WWDB project. Work is scheduled to be completed on the database early in 1999.

About TerraSim

TerraSim is a high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation database construction using cartographic data. TerraTools®, their primary product, is available for both Windows NT/2000/XP and SGI IRIX workstations. TerraTools is used in the automated construction of dense urban environments for regional planning as well as simulation databases for military exercises covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
