TerraSim Awarded NIMA Study Contract

August 10, 1998

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim has been awarded a study contract by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) to investigate the automatic translation of standard NIMA features, as defined in the FACC feature catalog, into 3D models and representations for simulation databases.

TerraSim's successful construction of the Az Zubayr demonstration database as part of the STOW '97 exercise demonstrated the feasibility of automatically translating NIMA Foundation Data and Mission Specific Data Set (MSDS) information into a complex simulation database. According to Michael Polis, TerraSim's Head of Visual Simulation, "The Az Zubayr experiment highlighted a number of issues about the features and the attributes which NIMA collects. This study contract will give us a chance to look at a broader range of features and attributes and give NIMA information regarding geospatial data production that may increase its utility for simulation database construction."

Experiments will be performed using TerraTools™, TerraSim's system for the automated construction of simulation databases from cartographic data. "The results of this study will enable even better utilization of standard NIMA data by TerraTools," said TerraSim president Dave McKeown. "By helping NIMA align their datasets more closely to the needs of the simulation community, it may result in significantly decreased simulation database construction costs, particularly in MOBA and other complex application environments."

About TerraSim

TerraSim is a high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation database construction using cartographic data. TerraTools®, their primary product, is available for both Windows NT/2000/XP and SGI IRIX workstations. TerraTools is used in the automated construction of dense urban environments for regional planning as well as simulation databases for military exercises covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
