From ASTM, Asian Survey and Mapping Newsletter: Virtual Mine in Kalimantan

September 08, 2005

Kalimantan, Borneo - The Tuhup coking coal project in Kalimantan in central Borneo is not due to come into production for two years. However, managers and investors can already tour the entire facility using a virtual environment created by VizMap in Brisbane. VizMap was contracted by PT Asmin Koalindo Tuhup to create a computer-based visualisation of the mine's facilities as they will be when mining of the rich coal reserve begins in 2007. VizMap used TerraTools software from TerraSim in the US to create the 3D database. Subcontractors supplied supplementary 3D models of mine equipment such as excavators, bulldozers and barges. Landsat imagery provided the broad scale ground texture, whilst data from the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission provides most of the digital terrain modeling. Finer modelling, particularly of the actual mine site, was sourced directly from the mining plans, and supplied in DXF.
