DEMTools 1.1 Released

March 15, 2006

Pittsburgh, PA - TerraSim is pleased to announce the availability of DEMTools 1.1 with significant improvements in functionality and ease of use.

DEMTools from TerraSim® supports the fusion of multiple digital elevation models (DEM) as an extension to ESRI ArcGIS 9. Features of DEMtools include novel automated DEM blending techniques, DEM hole filling, automated DEM matching and registration, resampling in arbitrary coordinate systems to arbitrary post spacing, and lake and ocean flattening tools. These capabilities provide ArcGIS users with powerful and robust methods for utilizing existing and emerging DEM data sources effectively in GIS applications.

New features in DEMTools 1.1 include:

  • The Fuse Tool now lets users enter a custom maximum limit on the memory that may be allocated for all input and output DEM files.
  • The Flatten Tool now lets users flatten an areal feature to the lowest, average, or highest elevation around its border, or to an arbitrary user defined attribute.
  • Default value options have been added, allowing the user to set persistent default display units and default precision as well as NoData settings for any raster layer.
  • A Tool Completion Dialog has been added for each DEMTools function.
  • The following vertical datums are now fully supported during the reprojection of a DEM:
    WGS84 geoid, WGS84 ellipsoid, WGS72 ellipsoid, MSL, NGVD 29, NGVD 88, NAD83 ellipsoid, AUSGeoid 98, OSGM02

Bug fixes and maintenance updates:

  • DEMs up to 1 GB in size can now be created as a single export file.
  • The product of a DEM Fuse is now marked with floating point precision.
  • The precision image generated by a Fuse is generated only when requested by the user.
  • The Fuse tool no longer drops lower resolution or smaller extent DEMs from fusion operations with much higher resolution or larger extent DEMs.
  • A bug with the Flatten tool assigning unknown elevations has been fixed.
  • DEM data is purged from workstation memory to prevent out of memory errors.
  • Unknown values are now correctly handled under DEM reprojection.
  • Unknown values in floating point DEMs are now correctly maintained.
  • Detailed DEMTools error messages have been made more informative.
  • ArcGIS interface stability fixes have corrected several bugs that caused DEMTools to crash.

DEMTools from TerraSim® is the first of several Source Data Preparation (SDP) tools developed for our customers to support rapid and accurate geospatial data collection tailored for demanding geo-intelligence, modeling and simulation, and commercial mapping applications.
