Shrivenham, UK - TerraSim is supporting Cranfield University's Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory (SSEL) at The Defence Academy of the UK at Shrivenham. The SSEL now has access to a large 'Afghan-like' area battlespace environment to support their Modelling and Simulation (M&S) educational activities and courses.
The correlated training environment "Terrastan" has been provided for educational use to the SSEL, along with a set of TerraTools© Core and optional runtime export licenses. The Terrastan environment has been used in a number of correlated visual, constructive and serious game runtime formats, including OpenFlight, OpenSceneGraph, OneSAF 5 International, JointSAF, MaK VR-Forces (GDB), Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2) and Steel Beasts Pro.
Both the TerraTools© software and the Terrastan correlated databases will be used to support a wide range of educational M&S activity conducted by the SSEL.
As the first example of this, students from the UK Ministry of Defence, together with several contractors and industry representatives recently took part in a weeklong Networked and Distributed Simulation course, led by Jonathan Searle, Head of the Cranfield University Modelling and Simulation Group at Shrivenham.
"In this course the students were learning about M&S interoperability - the ability for the M&S systems to interact and interoperate meaningfully. Using the wide range of simulation systems available in the SSEL, together with the correlated databases produced by TerraSim's products, further improves our ability to create relevant hands-on practical sessions, ranging from short hour-long demonstrations up to ten-day academic exercises, where the students really have the opportunity to understand the important issues when connecting and configuring multiple different simulations," said Jonathan Searle.
William Starmer, a principal geospatial analyst at TerraSim, who participated in a weeklong TerraTools training session held at the SSEL in February 2012, said that "the generation of correlated runtimes is a core capability for our commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and it is a pleasure to see the Terrastan demonstration database used to support UK MOD training and education."
About Cranfield Defence and Security
Cranfield University is the academic provider to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) for all postgraduate education and training in engineering, science, acquisition, management and leadership at the College of Management and Technology at the Defence Academy of the UK at Shrivenham.
Cranfield University is a wholly postgraduate research and innovation focused institution with a worldwide reputation for excellence and expertise in aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, environment, health, management, manufacturing and security. As the UK's most business-engaged University, led by research which is applied to real life situations, they are world leading in their contribution to global innovation.
TerraSim is a US owned high-technology company that provides software solutions and services for advanced visual simulation and database construction using a variety of geospatial source data.
TerraSim's TerraTools® automates construction of dense urban environments for operations planning and situation assessment as well as produces exercise databases covering hundreds of one degree geocells. TerraSim also provides database construction services and advanced technology development for both civilian and military customers.
TerraSim's source data preparation products cut the key cost drivers in modeling and simulation workflows. TerraSim Xtract™ recovers legacy source data and processes it for reuse in any modeling and simulation product. RoadMAP from TerraSim® seamlessly detects, delineates, and attributes road networks and other linear features from aerial and satellite imagery.
TerraSim's TerraTours® product supports highly interactive geospatial query using 3D visualizations linked to a variety of collateral source data. Using GISLink™ technology, TerraTours automatically georeferences and displays information in any web-enabled document.Copyright © 2017 TerraSim, Inc. All rights reserved.
