TerraSim® Releases TerraTools® 22.2
March 30, 2023
Pittsburgh, PA – TerraSim announces the release of TerraTools 22.2, the latest version of its industry-leading virtual terrain generation software. TerraTools 22.2 is available to all customers under active maintenance and support contracts. Current users can download the software installer and read the release notes on our support site.
TerraTools 22.2 supports the latest versions of the VBS Blue runtimes-VBS4 22.2 and VBS Blue IG 22.2-with its updated Export VBS Blue Source node. The release also includes updates to the Common Database (CDB) plug-in, which add improvements to the Export CDB node and a new Import CDB Vector Models node to add vector models to TerraTools projects. Other updates and performance enhancements are included. Eligible users can contact [email protected] for more information on these enhancements.

TerraTools: Main Application (enhanced)
- New set of Import Geopackage nodes that allow geopackage data (DEM, features, and imagery) to be imported into TerraTools
- Various software optimization and performance enhancements
TerraTools: Batch Mode Manager (enhanced)
- Increased control over remote instances on client machines
- Various software optimization and performance enhancements
TerraTools CDB Plug-in (enhanced)
- New Import CDB Vector Models node that imports CDB vector models into TerraTools
- Various software optimization and performance enhancements
- New node property that allows users to prepare data for use in MetaVR
TerraTools VBS Blue Source Plug-in (enhanced)
- Support for VBS4 22.2 and VBS Blue IG 22.2 via the updated Export VBS Blue Source node
- Support for VBS World Server 22.2 via the updated Publish to VWS node
- Reorganization of the Export VBS Blue Source node properties into multiple smaller tabs, making it easier to find options in the node settings
- Several new node properties for the Export VBS Blue Source node, including:
- Object Size Factor, which controls how far aggregated objects are drawn from the camera in VBS4 and VBS Blue IG. This is useful because the user can reduce processor load (resulting in performance gains) or increase immersion of the scene by scaling how far objects are drawn from the camera.
- Pack models in multiple batches, which allows P3D models—the proprietary model format used by VBS3 and VBS4—to be packed in batches, resulting in significantly faster exports
- Break up large models, which divides models that exceed 50 meters in any dimension into a series of smaller, connected models, making rendering in VBS3 and VBS4 easier
- Remove Aggregated P3D data, which discards transient P3D files after an SQLite file is created from a model to reduce storage size and to improve runtime performance
- Set VBS Dev Suite location, which allows for the manual specification of the VBS Developer Suite location; this is useful if the VBS Developer Suite is not located on the C:\ drive or if multiple installations of the VBS Developer Suite are present on a single machine
- Create soil map layer instead of albedo layer, which writes the input satellite image as a soil map layer instead of an albedo map layer
- Albedo Brightness and Albedo Contrast options that allow users to select brightness and contrast levels respectively when a satellite is written as an albedo map layer
- Remove Virtual Drive Cache After Execution, which deletes the cache folder on the virtual drive after the export finishes—freeing up disk space after model binarization (the process in which input data is made simulation-ready in VBS4)
- Output Models to Virtual Drive Only, which causes exported models to not be written locally to the TerraTools project and only placed directly into the VBS Developer Suite, which is useful for saving disk space by saving P3D models only to the P:\ drive
- New lightpoint attributes for use in VBS4 and VBS Blue IG versions 22.2 and newer, adding the ability to adjust light intensity and temperature, assign multiple lights to the same point or model, and/or designate a cut angle of the emissive plane
- Support for generating a lightmap with lights internal to models when exporting to VBS4 version 22.1 or newer, which allows for the new model-attached lights to work with the lightmap system in VBS4
- Various software optimization and performance enhancements
