Downtown Pittsburgh Visualization

One of the most challenging problems in the rapid construction of complex urban environments is the intricacy of the geospatial source data and need for fully automated generation of urban details in order to meet critical deadlines. TerraTools Core has been extended to support advanced urban generation and now includes urban details construction as an integral part of the basic software package.

Urban details processing can be tailored to user requirements for model placement including density, vanishing ranges, and levels of detail. In addition to automatic model placement and alignment using geometric constraints, model groups can be constructed and scripted to avoid repetition.

Beginning with a basic set of building footprints and road centerlines, TerraTools can calculate model positions. Using TerraSim's integrated triangulated irregular network (ITIN) technology, surface features such as sewer grates and pavement anomalies can be directly integrated into existing curbs and sidewalks. Collision detection is automatically performed so that urban details models such as light poles and fire hydrants will not overlap or be placed unnaturally close together. Model placement points and orientations can be exported as source data for correlation with other systems such as ESRI shapefiles and other vector formats.
