Construction of large area cities can be problematic for modeling and simulation applications given the diversity of source data and specific requirements for different portions of the urban environment. This database contains over 100,000 unique buildings, walls, and urban clutter parametrically generated from high resolution vector source data. For example, complex buildings are represented by sets of attributed 3D vector data, allowing for multiple roof levels, walls along the tops of buildings, and atriums in the centers of buildings.
Revetments around oil storage facilities were generated automatically using berm height and width collected at the base and top of the berm. Attributed point references in the source data were used to place geotypical models such as water towers, mosque minarets, and gates within walls. A high resolution aerial image is used in the city core to provide photo-realistic ground information. Elsewhere, geotypical textures are employed, based upon the attribution in the source data.
While the visual representation is organized in a paged format to support real-time rendering, a fully correlated export for OneSAF Terrain Format (OTF) was also created in the same TerraTools project.
